History
Located in the heart of Brooklyn, New York City Industries for the Blind, Inc. (NYCIB) is a 501(c)3, not-for-profit company that was founded and incorporated in November of 1995.
Our Mission:
Provide meaningful on site employment opportunities to people who are blind or visually impaired in the greater New York City metro area.
Many NYCIB employees were previously working for a NY agency with a history going back over 100 years; however the Industries program was abruptly discontinued in 1995. Recognizing the need for continued employment opportunities for visually impaired, New York City Industries for the Blind, Inc. was established.
Today it is the largest employer of people who are visually impaired in the New York City area with over 200 employees and fulfills contracts for labor, products and services.
There are approximately 100,000 people registered as legally blind within New York State - approximately half of those living in the NY city metro area. The unemployment rate is over 70% for people who are blind.
